GAIA ADVENTURES FOR WOMEN
AN INVITATION TO LOVE YOUR LIFE

Personal Training | Body Ball Workshops | Adventures for Women | Corporate Team Building

Ready For Your Lifestyle Change?

The arrival of the New Year is a chance to make some resolutions. It's a time to think about the things that went right and the opportunity to change the things that did not. Many resolutions involve either health and fitness and weight loss.

In the past few weeks, I have seen the gyms where I work out of (Executive Lifestyles off Cambie, and the Kerrisdale, Kitsilano and West End Community Centers) busy and filled with these kinds of people; they are intent on "getting fit fast". It is now just a few weeks later and already, the crowds are thinning and people are abandoning their goals. Why does this happen?

In my experience I see two main reasons for this trend:

  1. Changing habits takes time and commitment.
  2. Unrealistic expectations, like "If I exercise regularly, I should be able to shed all that excess weight within a month or two", or "Exercise will completely change my life."

Changing your lifestyle takes time and commitment

In order for resolutions or goals to work, they need to become longstanding habits in our daily routines. These habits need to become second nature. The reason most resolutions don't stick is simply because it is very difficult to change our habits. Here are some tips to help you stick to it:

  • Just do it!
All the planning, talking, thinking,  contemplating,  dreaming won't get you results. Get started today!
  • Something is better than nothing.
Taking little steps is better than taking no steps at all. Some people try to do too much all at once, and, as a result, it becomes overwhelming. Try to workout at least once or twice a week instead of trying to do it everyday.
  • Three weeks to change a habit or to adapt a new habit.
Stephen R. Covey says it takes 21 days to change a habit. I believe it takes longer. Try your program for at least three months, and you will be amazed at your accomplishments.

A personal trainer can help you structure realistic expectations for your fitness program. Beginning at a moderate-intensity level will allow your muscles, tendons and bones to adapt to the stress of exercise. Your chances of success will be greatly improved if you select activities that you enjoy or have enjoyed in the past (join a class, work with a trainer, take a hike or snowshoe, ski).

You will also have to consider your current condition and personal preferences: use indoor exercises for the client embarrassed to be seen in public, water exercises for clients with knee or hip problems, exercise sports for the fit and athletic.

One of the major reasons why people stop exercising is boredom. Build variety into your workout, within, or across, sessions, as well as varying exercise routes or locations on a regular basis. I know you can do this!
